JR Kyushu Rail Pass (2026): Is It Worth It? Use This 30-Second Calculator + Buy It Before You Land
Quick answer: the pass is worth it if you take even one round trip beyond Kumamoto. Fukuoka ⇄ Kagoshima is about ¥21,000 in single tickets — a 3-day unlimited All Kyushu Pass is ¥22,000. It's not worth it if you're staying inside Fukuoka city.

3 Things the Pass Doesn't Cover (Read Before Buying)
- The Hakata ⇄ Kokura shinkansen. That short hop is the Sanyo Shinkansen, run by JR West — your Kyushu pass won't open the gates. Take the Sonic limited express instead (covered).
- Unlimited seat reservations — only on the All Kyushu Pass. Northern and Southern passes cap free reserved seats at 6. Plenty for most trips, but plan your scenic trains first.
- City subways and private railways. Fukuoka's subway, trams in Kagoshima and Nagasaki — not included. Budget a few hundred yen a day for those, or grab a day pass locally.

›Can I buy the pass after arriving in Japan?
You can — at major JR Kyushu stations and the airport counter — but buying online in advance is usually cheaper and always faster: you skip the purchase queue and go straight to pickup.
›Do children need a pass?
Children aged 6–11 use a child pass at roughly half price. Under 6 ride free on a lap (no reserved seat of their own).
›Can I reserve Yufuin no Mori seats with the pass?
Yes — that's one of the best reasons to hold it. Reserve at any JR Kyushu counter after pickup, or online for a small fee. Do it early: the scenic green train sells out weeks ahead in peak season.
›Is it a physical ticket or a mobile pass?
The standard pass is a physical ticket that works in the automatic gates (don't forget to take it back!). JR Kyushu also offers a mobile pass option that skips the counter entirely.
